A considered update for your kitchen
Reface, Paint or Replace Your Cabinets?
Compare cabinet refacing, painting and replacement for your Worcester kitchen. Start with cabinet condition, layout and the changes you want.
A practical decision
Choose by condition and layout first.
Consider painting if you like the doors and want a different finish. Consider refacing if the boxes and layout work but you want new visible components. Compare replacement if the boxes are damaged or the layout needs to change.
What changes with each option?
| Question | Paint or refinish | Reface | Replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabinet boxes | Keep existing | Keep sound existing boxes | New boxes |
| Doors and fronts | Usually keep existing | Usually replace | New |
| Layout | Keep existing | Usually keep existing | Can change |
| Preparation to ask about | Cleaning, repairs, sanding, bonding and finish compatibility | Box repairs, adhesion, edges and consistent exposed surfaces | Removal, wall/floor condition and coordination with other work |
| Reason to reconsider | You dislike the door style or existing surfaces cannot accept the finish | Boxes are unsound or layout does not meet your needs | A smaller update already meets your goals |
Five questions before you request estimates
- Is the layout comfortable, including drawer access and appliance clearance?
- Are the cabinet boxes dry, firmly attached and structurally sound?
- Do you want a different door style, or only a different color?
- Which surfaces and hardware need to match when the work is finished?
- Are countertops or other kitchen changes part of the same project?
If you cannot answer a condition question, request an inspection rather than choosing a finish first.
Compare complete scopes, not just headline prices.
A painting quote and a refacing quote cover different work. Ask each contractor to list repairs, material, preparation, finishing method, hardware and exclusions. Request a timetable for your kitchen, including access and cleanup, rather than assuming a standard duration.
Take the quote checklist to each contractor ↗Questions homeowners ask
Is refacing always cheaper than replacing?
No universal saving applies to every project. Compare written scopes for your kitchen. Repairs, premium fronts, accessories and related work can change the comparison.
Can refacing fix water-damaged cabinets?
A new surface does not fix a weakened box. Have the damaged area assessed and compare repairing or replacing the affected cabinets before choosing refacing.
Which option is best for resale?
We cannot promise a resale return. Choose a sound installation and a scope that makes sense for your home, budget and plans. A local property professional can discuss your specific market.
