Cabinet Refacing in an Older Worcester Home: Pre-Work Checklist

Prepare a written scope for cabinet refacing in a pre-1978 Worcester home: existing paint, contractor identity, lead-safe credentials, work-area access and cleanup.

Before work starts

Define the preparation before choosing a finish.

For an older Worcester kitchen, a quote should explain what happens to existing painted surfaces, not just the new door color. Massachusetts identifies paid work disturbing specified amounts of paint in pre-1978 housing as subject to its lead-safe renovation requirements. Use the state's guidance to establish how the actual project will be handled.

Keep the checks separate.

City permits

Describe the whole project to Worcester's building department, including any structural, plumbing or electrical changes. Ask which permits apply to that scope.

Ordinary registration

Check the contracting business through the Massachusetts homeowner resources. Keep its legal identity and registration evidence with the proposal.

Lead-safe requirements

DLS administers a separate lead-safe renovation program. Ask how the proposed surface preparation will comply. A permit answer or an HIC number does not answer that question.

Refacing and deleading are different decisions.

DLS distinguishes renovation from work performed to achieve compliance through deleading. A cabinet update should not be described as making a home lead-free or producing a compliance letter without the appropriate process and documentation.

Ask DLS or a properly qualified professional how the requirements and any exceptions apply to the actual surfaces and work. This checklist does not determine whether a particular home or project is exempt.

Read the state's distinction ↗

Check the evidence behind a provider's name.

Keep a dated copy or reference to the state record and match it to the legal entity on the proposal. Do not treat an advertised service, a roster entry or an insurance statement as interchangeable evidence.
